For example: if you were scared whilst starting a big presentation at work, you’d still be scared of the future because you’d be thinking of the outcome if you were to mess it up.
Fear is a word that I have mentioned over 20 times in this blog since 2014, but never in this context.

People often ask me what happened to make me change my lifestyle, “Was there a moment or a particular thing that made you change?”

My answer is always the same, I changed my mindset.

So what does that mean?

It means that there was no singular moment that caused me to change, there were just multiple occasions that prompted me to overcome my fears and take positive steps forward. Sometimes people think that I just stubbed out my last cigarette and the next day I started eating a better diet. It actually took me a good 3 months to start eating better food after quitting smoking.

From the first time I knew I had a weight problem again, it probably took me about 2 years to get my life back on the right track. I took me so long to change because I was scared:

I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to cope with failure.
I was scared of being judged.
I was scared of being laughed at whilst trying to get fit.
I was scared of suffering through exercise.
I was scared of what I didn’t understand.
I was scared of what I didn’t know.
I was scared to start learning.
I was scared of forgiving myself for not being successful at golf in America.
I was scared to move forward with my life.

Do any of those ring a bell? I bet you’ve felt at least one of those at some point in your life.

Now I’m not saying you should be completely fearless, fear is a very necessary emotion; it protects us from danger and stops us from doing harm to ourselves. Unfortunately it is a double edged sword, it can inhibit us from achieving anything in our lives because it traps us mentally and forces us to put the brakes on for self preservation.

Just so we are clear, here are a couple of examples: 

  1. You are scared because you are about to backflip a 60ft canyon on a motorbike.  (I’d say this is probably a reasonable fear to have.)
  2. You are scared because you want a salad for lunch but you don’t want people to judge you. (I’d say this is an irrational fear, who cares what they think? You are living your life for you! Not Them…)

The only way I overcame my list of fears was by staying in the moment, not getting caught up in the future and saying to myself, “Come on Brendan, FEAR stands for Face Everything and Rise!” 

With every single positive step that you make in each day, you are increasing your positive energy. Each conscious decision that you make without letting fear influence your thoughts, you are overcoming fear and rising to become a better and stronger version of yourself.

In golf there is a simple psychological state that I have had the privilege of experiencing many times. It is called ’the zone’. The only way I can describe it is pure control, every thought that I had was positive, there was no space for fear because I was focused on each shot at a time. The result of being truly present was playing some of the best golf of my life.

Whether you are trying to commit to getting up early for the gym each day, or trying to get motivated to join the running club down the road. If you are scared to start researching and learning about the best ways to sustainably lose weight or even step foot in the gym, you need to say to yourself: “I will face everything and rise!”
