I am really excited to tell you today that I am an ambassador for Freet Footwear - over the last few weeks I have been in contact with the owner of the shoe company and now I can happily say that I have some awesome new shoes! So what does this mean for you? Well it means a 55% discount using my code! So have a read and see if you'd like to pick up a pair.
Freet as a company believe in making ethical, vegan friendly products that help to promote freedom for our feet. You can read more on their philosophy here. The shoes will take you back to the time when you were a kid running around barefoot and being free!
The idea is that over the years shoes have become more and more heel oriented, we have slowly learned to walk and run with our heels striking the ground first. This way of walking and running can cause to a lot of extra pressure on the joints over time, leading to injuries and pain throughout the body. What these shoes promote is more of a 'mid/forefoot' strike allowing the muscles in the legs to act is the shock absorbers rather than the joints taking the hit.
The design of the shoe is simple, sock like, and resembles a foot:
The split between the big toe leaves plenty of wiggle room and a much more responsive approach to walking, running and all sports. Wearing modern shoes has removed a lot of the ability for our feet to react to the environment and ground beneath our feet. Often our reaction time is taken away by big chunky trainers and by the time we get to react it is too late. With these shoes there is no time lost, your foot instantly feels the ground and your brain can make the course corrections.
If you'd like to hear more on the topic of running with barefoot shoes then check out this video.
I never thought I would wear shoes that looked like this, but after feeling the ground more and being able to respond quicker I can say that they are some of the most comfortable performance shoes I have ever worn.
I am obviously a fan of the Freet Footwear, but I would like to say that if you have never used barefoot shoes before then take some time to ease into them. If you are big into your running and want to try them start with small runs and build up. Essentially most people will have to re-learn how to walk and run, I certainly have over the last few weeks and it has made a huge difference in how I think about my joints.
So, what do the shoes help with?
They help with posture and are worn without socks so your feet can go back to naturally regulating their own temperature - I suffer tremendously from cold feet especially around the house at night. Since wearing these my feet have been able to keep their temperature a lot better.
What can you use the shoes for?
Running, walking, house wear and any active sport that you’d like to feel more grounded in. They have been amazing in my ZUU workouts but would aid in any sort of training where you need to be nice and agile.
Where can you buy the shoes and how much are they?
If you visit the website - www.freetfootwear.co.uk - and have a browse through the shoes, you might find some that you really like. The pairs pictured above range from £60-£70, but here is the really cool part!
THE 55% DISCOUNT CODE - use 'BrendanT' as a coupon code and you can pick up a nice deal, then enjoy the wonderful freedom for your feet!
The move to minimalist shoes is hitting the larger companies now as they realise the need for more responsive footwear, my only bit of advice before making a change like this it to do you research on walking and running styles, be sure that you have a good understanding before you dive into any new pair of shoes. If you do pick up a pair then ENJOY the ground beneath your Freet!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and I'd be happy to help out, I hope you have a great weekend ahead!
Stay Strong and Keep Moving!
If you tuned into the 'Jonny Series' of videos then you'll know that I was down in London for a few days last month. My visit took me to some awesome places, fitness parks, gyms, juice bars, salad bars and skate parks. Not to mention the weather was amazing! London completely transforms when the sun shines, people become a little brighter and more animated.
On the warmest day I took a wander up to a little place that I had always wanted to visit; Neal’s Yard. As I stepped into this little courtyard I could feel myself becoming happier.
There is a fantastic energy in this little courtyard, I imagine this little it as the calm, happy centre of a crazy, busy city.
I looked to my right and saw a man in a suit come out of a shop front holding a bottle of something bright and green, I knew from that moment it was where I was heading. As you walk in you are greeted by some cool music, a neatly displayed fridge filled with great products and a little area to sit and enjoy whatever it is that you choose to drink or eat.
My lack of knowledge about the place was probably very obvious. When I reached the counter I was greeted by Emma Wood, who owns the brand Blend & Press. Emma was very bubbly and explained a little bit about the concept. Blend & Press focus on being a juice bar that offers cold pressed juices; for those who don’t know what that is there is some information here: Cold Press Juicing.
Emma and her team focus creating a positive atmosphere with products that are healthy, organic and taste amazing. I had a brief chat with Emma that day and wandered off into the busy London streets with my Glow Smoothie in hand.
My mind ticked over for a couple of days and I decided to pop back to talk to Emma a bit more. Thankfully she gave me plenty of her time and I am truly grateful for the experience.
Emma has been involved in health and wellbeing industry for many years and worked with Neal’s Yard health remedies for a while. She explained that she wanted to branch out and work more with juices and other natural ways to cleanse and look after the body. Her concept for Blend and Press started in Frame Gym in Shoreditch where she laid on a single juice product to ‘test the water.’ There was genuine success and interest which has led to the expansion of the Blend & Press brand into central London.
So how does this help you?
The reason being, I saw an improvement in my skin, plus I am a sucker for Mango. The juices are not sweet and that is very deliberate, the focus is on balance, low in sugar and high in vitamins, minerals and electrolytes.
Emma’s success has only made her more focused on creating an environment that helps people feel positive and happy in their bodies. In her words, ‘we are aware of everyone’s bio-individualism.’ Simply put: each person is different and requires a tailored approach; I guess you could call Blend & Press the personal trainers of the Juice world.
It was a highlight of my week spending time with Emma and talking about the positive effects of nutrition. I guess the sceptics out in the world will always say, ‘well why don’t you just eat the fruits and veg instead of juicing it?’ And that is my point; people don’t get enough natural goodness. And juicing is one way of getting people to learn about food. Growing up I remember eating vegetables was a chore; they didn’t taste as good as sweets or ice cream. That is only because when you are eating processed food and avoiding micronutrients you are simply triggering ‘Toxic Hunger.’ For more on this topic you can view this video.
My success with weight loss was from re-programing and educating myself with juicing to enjoy a more plant based diet. A diet rich in plants and natural foods can change your life. It can change the lives of so many people in this world.
We need more people to be doing what Blend & Press are doing, we need more people to take control of their situations and educate themselves about food. It starts with you and me. Remember that money talks so the next time you go shopping or out for a meal invest in your health and not the pleasure centres of your brain. If everyone starts investing in their health, then food companies will have to change how they do things. It is that simple.
